The LPI Capability Map lists skills required for success in today's learning and development profession. With it, the LPI is creating a common language for describing these skills, a language shared by all. For that reason, we are committed to keeping the LPI Capability Map open-access and available for use free of charge by anyone, anywhere on an individual basis.
This free-to-use tool allows you to explore the skills in the LPI Capability Map and to create your own profile using those skills that you are using in your role today, and also thinking of future roles you might consider.
The LPI Capability Map is the product of a continuous review process which examines current literature, trends, and practices around the world, and in conjunction with a range of industry experts.
Registration is needed so you can return to your assessment at any time and update it. Registration is a very simple two-step process. First you register with your email and a password. Then you complete your user profile. You will then be able assess your skills against the framework, save it and login again at any time in the future to carry out further reviews as you acquire or improve your skills.
The LPI respects your privacy and neither your email, nor any other identifying data will ever be shared with outside bodies, but the LPI reserves the right to present aggregate, anonymised research based on this data.
That very much depends on you but we would recommend you set aside approximate 30 – 45 minutes. You also don't have to complete it all at once. You can, for example, assess a couple of areas, and then logon again to complete it at a later stage.
Yes! The research on which the Capability Map is based reinforces that Learning Professionals have a very diverse skill set, hence why there are 24 different skills areas across 5 distinct categories to assess yourself against. Whilst we would not expect any one individual to have all the skills identified, you should assess yourself on all the skills even if the rating you select is '0' – No Experience. This helps you to consider both your current skills and role, together with any future roles and skills you might want to work towards.

Once you have completed your assessment, you will be able to identify any skills gaps you may have as well as skills that you may want to develop to improve your performance or progression towards other roles. You may also want to include your assessment as part of your personal development review.
At the moment, completing an assessment will allow you to identify your own skills and competencies, although you will be able to see the higher level skills descriptors which should allow you to identify the types of skills required for career progression. Over time, as more people complete a review, we will be able to match skills and competency levels to job titles. When we have this data, we will then be in a better position to understand what skills are required in what job roles which should help learning professionals identify career paths.
